Double composting toilet cabin
Fuente Verde, Costa Rica - Execution only (design by Rodo Saenz)
Besides fulfilling its purpose as a composting toilet, this structure is an exploration into the possibilities of heat-bending Phyllostachys bamboo for structural use. Phyllostachys is uniquely able to bend when heated with a propane torch, and then hold shape when cooled down. The reinforced umbrella design, with its many ribs, offers surprising load-bearing capabilities.
Materials used
The cabin consists mostly of natural and locally sourced materials. Ceder, Laurel, salvaged hardwood and various kinds of bamboo were all found on the surrounding land. Clay and soil used for the walls were dug up a stone’s throw away. A thin coat of hydraulic lime makes the walls waterproof. The roof is the only not-so-natural outlier, made out of polycarbonate sheets and cement-soaked Geotextile.
Built together with Rodolfo Saenz for aspiring retreat center EcoMaste.
