Bamboo furniture
Orotina, Costa Rica - Execution only (design by Rodo Saenz)
3 stools and a headboard out of burned Phyllostachys bamboo. These pieces were made using only traditional bamboo furniture making techniques and manual tools. Hand-carved bamboo nails replace metal nails or screws, and hemp cord lashing replaces wood glue.
Materials
To achieve the rounded corders on the thick posts of the headboard, a series of partial cuts was made. This allows the bamboo to fold in one direction, while retaining structural strength due to the remarkable toughness of bamboo fibers.
